Historical NoteThe 1966 Food for Freedom Program was a foreign aid program to send food to countries dealing with hunger and promote food production in those countries. The Space Race was the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to further space exploration and technology out of fear of space being used for nuclear power. In 1966, the year this cartoon was made, the Soviet Union landed its first unmanned spacecraft on the moon and the crew of Gemini VIII performed the first docking in space.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
