Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ wears a Santa Claus costume and leaps over the world with a bag of gifts ("Foreign Aid"). He says, "Better be good and cease-fire!" to two men (“Pakistan”, “India”), each of whom has a gun going off. Caption: “​​Santa Claus”. Artist signature lower right: "Hungerford”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at upper left: “J83”.
Historical NoteAfter the partition of India in 1947, the predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir was made a part of India instead of Pakistan. In 1965, Pakistan invaded Kashmir to take the province and was unsuccessful. Before the war, the United States had provided both Pakistan and India with military assistance and foreign aid, but afterwards Pakistan aligned itself more with China and India developed closer relations with the Soviet Union.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
