Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Two men ("India" "Pakistan") throw bricks at each other near a broken wall ("Built by U.S. Aid"). On the other side of the wall, in dark water ("China Red Sea") an octopus extends one tentacle over the wall toward the men. Caption reads: "People Protected by a Wall--Shouldn't Tear It down to Throw Stones!". Artist signature lower left: "Reg Manning [drawing of a cactus] McNaught Syndicate, Inc.".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To President Lyndon Johnson for his cartoon collection Reg Manning [drawing of a cactus] 10-31-65". Handwritten at lower left: "3 col". Handwritten and stamped at bottom center: "Sep 13 1965 Mailing".
Historical NoteAfter the partition of India in 1947, the predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir was made a part of India instead of Pakistan. In 1965, Pakistan invaded Kashmir to take the province and was unsuccessful. Before the war, the United States had provided both Pakistan and India with military assistance and foreign aid, but afterwards Pakistan aligned itself more with China and India developed closer relations with the Soviet Union.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
