Physical DescriptionOriginal two-framed cartoon drawing. Frame 1: Two small men ("India" and "Pakistan") take revolvers from two large men (Uncle Sam and "USSR"). Frame 2: The two large men look surprised as a dust-up appears appears around the two small men as they turn their weapons toward each other. Caption reads: "Peacemakers?". Artist signature lower right: "Bill McClanahan".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To President Johnson: - warmest regards, Bill McClannahan, Dallas News".
Historical NoteAfter the partition of India in 1947, the predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir was made a part of India instead of Pakistan. In 1965, Pakistan invaded Kashmir to take the province and was unsuccessful. Before the war, the United States had provided both Pakistan and India with military assistance and foreign aid, but afterwards Pakistan aligned itself more with China and India developed closer relations with the Soviet Union.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
