Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ welcomes a woman (“Prime Minister Indira Gandhi”) to the White House. A man carries her luggage ("India's Many Problems”, “Famine”, “Poverty") and is followed by a huge stork ("India's Increasing Population Explosion"). Artist signature lower left: "Temple”.

Historical NoteThe Bihar famine of 1966-1967 was a famine in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh caused by a decrease in grain production and rise in grain prices. Indira Gandhi was the prime minister of India when this cartoon was made.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
