Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits at his desk with his hands over his ears as a dove yells in one ear and a hawk yells in the other. A paper ("Korea") lays before him. Artist signature lower left: "Liederman”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: “1/31/68”. Handwritten at lower right: [blue] “56.5”.
Historical NoteOn January 23, 1968, the USS Pueblo was captured by North Korea, which claimed that the ship had entered North Korean territory. In response, President Johnson negotiated for the release of the captive sailors to avoid getting into another war. In this cartoon, a hawk and a dove squawk at Johnson, demonstrating his dilemma on how to handle the crisis.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
