Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Castro stands on an island labeled Cuba holding a sign ("Free Passage to US"), pointing to a ship and says, "Here, Beat it!" The Statue of Liberty ("Mother of Exiles") is across the water in the foreground. Statue of Liberty has quotation on the base ("Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free"). Caption reads: "A Job Not Unknown to Us". Artist signature lower left: "Alexander".
Inscriptions and MarkingsInscribed in ink by the artist: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson with a prayer for his early recovery. Sincerely, F.O. Alexander"
Historical NoteOn October 3, 1965, President Johnson signed the Immigration Act of 1965 into law which, among other immigration policy changes, guaranteed asylum for Cuban refugees. On October 8, 1965, President Johnson underwent gallbladder surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital.
