Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, a soldier, stands on the shore (“Dominican Republic”) while gunfire bursts (“Bang!” and “Rat! Tat! Tat! Tat!”) around his feet. He speaks to a man (identifiable as Fidel Castro) and other men on a boat ("Takeover") with the hammer and sickle symbol on the boat and the flag Castro carries. Caption: “There's Been a Change in Plans--Turn Around!”. Artist signature lower right: "Brooks The Birmingham News".

Historical NoteIn April 1965, the Dominican Revolutionary Party installed a president in the National Palace. In response, President Johnson sent Marines to the Dominican Republic to evacuate American citizens from the country, end the civil war, and establish a conservative Reformist Party government. Fidel Castro was the prime minister of Cuba during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency. Johnson believed he was responsible for attempting to establish Communism in the Dominican Republic.
