Historical NoteFidel Castro was the prime minister of Cuba during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency. He supported revolutionary and leftist movements around the world, and the United States government worried he would spread Communism in the Western Hemisphere. J. William Fulbright was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and pursued a policy of detante.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
