Historical NoteIn April 1965, the Dominican Revolutionary Party installed a president in the National Palace. In response, President Johnson sent Marines to the Dominican Republic to evacuate American citizens from the country, end the civil war, and establish a conservative Reformist Party government. J. William Fulbright was a Democratic senator from Arkansas. He was the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and supported detente policies. He criticized Johnson’s policies in the Dominican Republic in September 1965. He denounced the American invasion, saying it was as bad as the Bay of Pigs attack, and that the Dominican president was not a Communist like the US government claimed. He denounced that the United States was supporting a reactionary military regime instead.
