Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Outside the White House, LBJ has cut a rose ("Dominican Republic") from a small garden ("Johnson's Foreign Policy Rose Garden"). As he sniffs it, a bee ("Fulbright's Sting") stings him on the nose. LBJ says, "Sniff - Sniff - OUCH!". Caption reads: "Last Rose of Summer". Artist signature lower left: "Holland © 1965 by The Chicago Tribune".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson - with best regards, Ed Holland". Handwritten at lower right: "O.K. T. Moore" "503".
Historical NoteIn April 1965, the Dominican Revolutionary Party installed a president in the National Palace. In response, President Johnson sent Marines to the Dominican Republic to evacuate American citizens from the country, end the civil war, and establish a conservative Reformist Party government. J. William Fulbright was the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
