Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ ("USA") dumps waste into a trashcan ("Grounds for Complaints") outside a building ("Canal Zone"). A man (identifiable as Fidel Castro) drives a truck ("Latin America Brand [Communism]"), stops, and glares at him. A cat shovels dirt in a dustpan. The building has American and Panamanian flags on it. Caption: “Just House-Cleaning--NOT Moving!”. Artist signature lower right: "Runtz news ‘64”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: [blue] “3 col line Ed Page Fri”. Handwritten at lower center: [blue] “Bangor Daily News - Jan. 17, 1964”.
Historical NoteIn January 1964, Panamanians protested the American control of the Panama Canal. In response, Lyndon Johnson began negotiations for a new treaty to eventually transfer control of the canal to the Panamanian government. In this cartoon, Johnson transfering the canal to Panama removes a reason for Latin American nations to oppose the United States and presumably turn to Communism.
