Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man tells LBJ, "Don't just hang there--Do Something!" as another man (“Nasser”) picks him up by the ears. Another man (“Sukarno”) taps Nasser on the shoulder, saying "Next!". A small piece of paper “The Daily Oklahoman” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Not a Yip”. Artist signature lower right: "Lange”.
Historical NotePresident Johnson was known to lift his beagles by their ears. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora. In December 1964, after hearing rumors that the United States would cut off aid to Egypt, Gamal Abdel Nasser said that the United States could go "drink from the sea." In 1964, Sukarno pushed an anti-American campaign in Indonesia denouncing American businesses and cultural exports.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
