Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, dressed as a cowboy, and a man (identifiable as Dean Rusk) tip-toe ("Rusk-Johnson pussyfooting") over sand dunes passing a "Foreign Policy" sign. Behind them, their footprints resemble those of a cat. In the background, an old man ("History") is writing in a large book. Caption reads: "Footprints in the Sands of Time". Artist signature lower left: "Holland © 1965 by The Chicago Tribune".
Inscriptions and Markings"Handwritten at lower right: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson - with best wishes - Ed Holland". Handwritten at lower right: "[circled] made" "[underlined] 457".
Historical NoteDean Rusk was President Johnson's Secretary of State. During his presidency, Johnson followed Harry Truman's doctrine of containment, which was intended to stop the spread of communism.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
