Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Dressed in gym clothes, LBJ ("USA") and a man (identifiable as Leonid Brezhnev "USSR") toss a medicine ball back and forth. The medicine ball is very hot and both men have bandaged fingers. Caption: “​​Medicine Ball”. Artist signature lower right: "Scott Long ‘67 Minneapolis Tribune”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "To President Johnson with sincerest good wishes - Scott Long”. Handwritten at lower right: “51”.
Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race.
