At his desk, LBJ holds a telephone (“Paris talks”) in one hand, but is speaking through a branch of a bush ("Hollybush to Moscow") in his other hand that is growing outside his window. Behind LBJ are an American flag and curtains. Caption: “​​Extension Phone”. Artist signature lower right: "Sandeson”.

Historical NoteOn June 23-25, 1967, Lyndon Johnson and Aleksey Kosygin met at Hollybush Mansion in Glassboro, New Jersey to discuss issues concerning world peace such as the Six Day War, the Vietnam War, and the nuclear arms race. It was notable for being successful in decreasing tensions, even though no agreements were signed. The Moscow-Washington hotline was a line of direct communication between the Pentagon and the Kremlin established in 1963. It allows for quick communication to avoid potential conflicts.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
