Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ is asleep in bed with a man (“Kosygin”), who has one eye open. The alarm clock ("Reported Soviet missiles back in Cuba") has bombs as clock hands. On the clock is a hat, mustache, and beard (identifiable as Fidel Castro). Caption: “Another Rude Awakening?”. Artist signature lower right: "Sandeson”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "For President Johnson with kindest regards -- Bill Sandeson”.
Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race. The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 was caused by the placement of Soviet missiles in Cuba, which was seen as a threat to the United States.
