Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Two boys write on a school blackboard. One, which has the face of LBJ, writes “Peace” while another one (“N.K.”) (identifiable as Nikita Khrushchev) writes "Pieces". A small piece of paper “© 1964 Chicago’s American” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Trouble Is, They Spell It Differently”. Artist signature lower right: "Shoemaker”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To the Honorable Lyndon B. Johnson with my best wishes. Shoemaker".
Historical NoteDuring the Johnson administration and general postwar era, much foreign policy was dictated by the Cold War, the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union for political influence amidst decolonization, associated with proxy wars, ideological struggles, the nuclear arms race, and the space race.
