Historical NoteIn June 1968, a poll taken found that about a third of Americans considered the United States to be a sick society. This number was higher among Black Americans than white Americans and in April of 1968, the day before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. used the term “sick,” bringing it into the public eye.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
