Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A chicken with LBJ's head struggles after laying two large eggs ("Great Society Budget", "Vietnam Cost"). Caption reads: "Hatch Act". Artist signature lower right: "Herc Ficklen The Dallas Morning News, 1966".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "With all best wishes to President Lyndon B. Johnson".
Historical NoteThe Johnson Administration submitted 87 bills to Congress, and Johnson signed 84, or 96%, arguably the most successful legislative agenda in US congressional history. The Vietnam War cost an estimated $700,000,000 in 1965 and $15,119,000,000 in 1966, the year this cartoon was made. All this government spending from the war and Great Society, as well as a tax cut to increase spending by consumers and businesses, led to inflation.
