Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man in a covered wagon ("Congress") pours a barrel of water ("Budget Waste") over man in a "Great Society" tub. The man says, "No Need to be stingy with the drinkin' water - LBJ showed us the big lake!". At a lake above them, signs read: ("Estimated Economic Growth", "Anticipated Tax Collection". Caption reads: "What If It's a Mirage?" Artist signature lower right: "Parrish". Additional text at lower left: "© 1966 by The Chicago Tribune."

Historical Note
The Johnson Administration submitted 87 bills to Congress, and Johnson signed 84, or 96%, arguably the most successful legislative agenda in US congressional history, leading to a lot of government spending. Raising taxes would slow down the economy, pay for the Great Society programs, and prevent inflation.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
