Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Uncle Sam is wearing a tailcoat as he shakes hands with LBJ and Lady Bird near a vase of flowers ("Great Society"). The long tails of his coat ("Vietnam”, “Congo") are on fire. Caption: “Stuck with These Tails!”. Artist signature lower right: "Sandeson."
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: “For - President Johnson, on the receiving line - Bill Sandeson”.
Historical NoteLyndon Johnson cared about how he would be remembered in history. While at the start of his presidency, he was known more for his Great Society and civil rights domestic policies, he would later also be associated with his involvement in Vietnam. The Congo Crisis was a civil war in the modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1960 to 1965. During this war, the United States and Soviet Union both got involved.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
