Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Two men (identifiable as Mike Mansfield and Everett Dirksen) lie down blocking the doorway to the Senate and hold a sign ("Only over Our Dead Bodies!”), as LBJ tries to come in with a book ("Stronger Gun Laws"). Artist signature lower center: "Ed Valtman ‘68”. A small piece of paper “The Hartford Times” adhered to lower center.
Historical NoteThe Gun Control Act of 1968 was a response to the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. Johnson signed the law on October 11, banning the interstate sale of firearms, prohibited certain people such as minors and felons from owning guns, and it restricted the importation of guns.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
