Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, in rumpled work clothes, runs from an explosion ("House Defeat of DC Home Rule"). Barrels ("Great Society Legislation") are laying around. Caption reads: "To the Hills, Men! The Still Blew Up!" Artist signature lower left: "Poinier Detroit News '65".

Historical NoteIn 1967, Lyndon Johnson proposed a plan to give Washington DC home rule so it could have a local government, made up of an appointed mayor-commissioner, assistant mayor-commissioner, and council. His plan passed in Congress.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
