Historical NoteIn September 1952, during Dwight Eisenhower’s campaign for president, vice presidential candidate Richard Nixon gave a speech defending his integrity as a politician. In this speech, he mentioned that his daughter had a puppy named Checkers.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
