Historical NoteHubert Humphrey needed to choose a running mate during the Democratic National Convention of 1968. Several politicians were included such as New York Republican candidate Nelson Rockefeller, Texas governor John Connally, Vietnam ambassador Cyrus Vance, DNC Chairman Larry O'Brien, and former Peace Corps director Sargent Shriver. Eventually, Humphrey's association with Lyndon Johnson and the Vietnam War split the Democratic Party and hurt his campaign.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
