Historical NoteWhen Lyndon Johnson saw his official White House portrait by Peter Hurd, he said it was the “ugliest thing I ever saw.” By contrast, he liked political cartoons of himself and invited political cartoonists and other press correspondents to his ranch for barbecues in 1964. Johnson also had features that were easy to caricature, such as his nose, ears, and chin, and along with his cowboy boots and hat, these characteristics gave him a recognizable look.
