Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ ("’64") falls down a mountain ("Mandate"). On the way down he passes Richard Nixon struggling up. A small piece of paper “Fischetti” adhered to upper left. A small piece of paper “© 1968 Chicago Daily News” adhered to lower right. A small piece of paper “Publishers-Hall Syndicate” adhered to lower right. Caption: “On the Other Hand, Dick, If Things Go Sour You Only Have Half as Far to Fall”. Artist signature lower right: "Fischetti”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "For President Johnson-just when I was learning to draw you! Best, John Fischetti 1969". Handwritten at lower left: [illegible] “Nov 8, 1968”.
Historical NoteRichard Nixon won the 1968 presidential election. On January 20, 1969, he was inaugurated as president and Lyndon Johnson left office. Nixon inherited the Vietnam War and its peace talks.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
