Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits at his desk reading aloud from a will ("Dem. Last Will"). A man (identifiable as Nguyen Van Thieu) throws a fit in front of the desk. Another man (identifiable as Richard Nixon) sits in a chair to the side and another man (identifiable as J. William Fulbright) sits in front of Thieu and holds a cigar. Caption: “And to Dick Nixon, I Leave President Thieu”. Artist signature lower left: "Poinier”. Also printed lower center: “Detroit News ‘68”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: “To President Johnson with all good wishes Art Poinier”.
Historical NoteRichard Nixon won the 1968 presidential election. On January 20, 1969, he was inaugurated as president and Lyndon Johnson left office. Nixon inherited the Vietnam War and its peace talks. Nguyen Van Thieu was the president of South Vietnam.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
