Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, with a hand on his aching back, stands by a snowmobile ("The Presidency") next to a man (identifiable as Richard Nixon). They look at boulders in the field ahead ("Racial Problems”, “War and Peace”, “Crime", “Generation Gap”, “Inflation”, “Poverty”, “Etc.”). Additional text at upper right: “New Item: President, President-Elect Confer”. Caption: “Just Watch out for Boulders!”. Artist signature lower right: "Vic Runtz news ‘68”.

Historical NoteRichard Nixon won the 1968 presidential election. On January 20, 1969, he was inaugurated as president and Lyndon Johnson left office. Nixon inherited foreign policy issues such as the Vietnam War and its peace talks as well as domestic issues such as inflation.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
