Historical NoteOn November 22, 1963, President Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald while riding in his motorcade in Dallas. Hours later, Johnson was sworn in as president on an airplane. Johnson created the Warren Commission to investigate the motives of the assassination, which was made public in September 1964.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
