Historical NoteThe Medicare and Medicaid Act was signed by President Johnson on July 30, 1965. Medicare provided healthcare for the elderly, a fast-growing demographic, and Medicaid helped the poor. President Johnson signed the bill at the Truman Presidential Library to acknowledge the early attempts of Harry Truman to provide national healthcare. In this cartoon, the American Medical Association has trouble ensuring that the price of healthcare does not go up.Additional Details
