Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. In a hospital room, LBJ pats the bed ("Senate Passed Hospital Medicare") and holds flowers ("Welcome Old Voters"). Humphrey holds pills ("Questionable Side Effects"). Caption: “Hubert! Get Rid of Those Pills!”. Artist signature lower right: "Sandeson”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: “For - President Lyndon Johnson, like Veep Humphrey I'm a druggists' son. Bill Sandeson”.
Historical NoteThe Medicare and Medicaid Act was signed by President Johnson on July 30, 1965. Medicare provided healthcare for the elderly, a fast-growing demographic, and Medicaid helped the poor. President Johnson signed the bill at the Truman Presidential Library to acknowledge the early attempts of Harry Truman to provide national healthcare.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
