Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ watches from White House as a man ("Congress") beckons a dog inside a dog house labeled with his name (“Health Bill”). Previous names ("Socialism", "Medicare") have been struck through. Caption: “Names Must Make a Difference!”. Artist signature lower left: "Sandeson”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the bottom: “To - President Johnson with good wishes - Bill Sandeson”.
Historical NoteThe Medicare and Medicaid Act was signed by President Johnson on July 30, 1965. Medicare provided healthcare for the elderly, a fast-growing demographic, and Medicaid helped the poor. President Johnson signed the bill at the Truman Presidential Library to acknowledge the early attempts of Harry Truman to provide national healthcare.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
