Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man sits at his desk with a view of the US Capitol through the window. Caption: “Can I Be So Far Out of Step?--I Haven't Earned a Single Presidential Pen!”. Artist signature lower right: "Parker ©1965 Washington Post Co.”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at upper left: "Happy Birthday Mr. President Isadore Parker".
Historical NoteSome presidents used multiple pens to sign legislation and then distributed the pens to the people standing nearby who helped pass the bill. Because Lyndon Johnson signed so many laws as president, many pens were made so that he could give them to people after bill signings. When Johnson decided not to run for president in 1968, a surplus of pens were already made in anticipation for his second term.
