Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. The drawing is on the artist's letterhead. A man and woman, both wearing hats with antennae, hold pamphlets and look at cartoon strips framed on the wall. Also on the wall is a sign indicating the year "A.D. 2066". The man says, "So that's what life was like back in the 1900's!". Artist signature lower right: "Howard Boughner".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "Dear Mr. President: May I urge your support of a ‘National Cartoon Center’? I believe cartoons to be a most accurate mirror of how America acts, thinks and feels in our times! B"
Historical NoteDuring Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, several cartoonists sent him letters urging him to establish a National Cartoon Center, a museum of political cartoons, comic books, newspaper comics, animation, and other cartoons. No permanent museum was ever established, but a few exhibits were produced by a Museum of Graphic Arts in New York City in 1968.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
