Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A baseball player ("Congressman" LBJ) wears a uniform ("New Deal") and swings several bats. Other players ("Democrats") watch. LBJ says: "Let me slap a few homers for Roosevelt! Heck, I'm as strong as horse-radish for him. Give me elbow room!". Caption reads: "Texas Rookie Goes Up". Artist signature lower right: "Dallas Journal April 30, 1937 Patton”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "Best regards to Lyndon Johnson. Jack Patton 1937".
Historical NoteThis 1937 cartoon is the first to feature Lyndon Johnson. When Congressman James Buchanan died in 1937, Lyndon Johnson decided to run for the vacated seat. Competitors were numerous but young Lyndon quickly separated himself from the rest by running as an ardent Roosevelt supporter. His advocacy of the New Deal, together with is energetic personal campaigning style, helped him win an upset victory.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
