Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ stands in front of a door ("Democratic Nomination") and turns to talk to a donkey who is poking his head through the door. LBJ holds a sign ("I insist I am NOT a candidate!"). Caption reads: "...Er...Leave That Door Slightly Ajar, Podner!". Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star."

Historical NoteSenate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson had planned to sit out the 1960 primaries and present himself as a powerful compromise candidate at the Democratic Convention. When that plan fell through, he accepted the vice-presidential spot and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket was born.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
