Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. An old cowboy in a fishing boat ("Texas") relaxes with a fishing pole anchored between his legs and a trap floating in the water. Oil wells can be seen on the shore in the background. Caption reads: "All Quiet on the Tidelands Front". Artist signature lower right: "Herc Ficklen."
Historical NoteThe Texas Tidelands Controversy was a conflict about how far into the ocean state borders extend and if the federal government has access to those waters, which had implications for oil drilling. Many formerly independent coastal states still claimed ownership of those waters. In 1953, President Eisenhower signed the Submerged Lands Act to address this problem, which gave states ownership of the waters for three miles beyond their coasts.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
