Historical NoteThe 1956 Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago and resulted in the nomination of Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver as president and vice-president. Senator Lyndon Johnson ran for president in 1956, but lost the nomination. However, he did get a lot of national attention through his political campaign. In 1960, Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination for president. When the Democratic front-runner and fellow senator John F. Kennedy offered Johnson the VP spot on the ticket, the two men compromised and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket won in the 1960 presidential election.
