Historical NoteIn 1960, Johnson ran for the Democratic nomination for president. His legislative resume made him a competitive candidate, and he had the backing of his friend and mentor Sam Rayburn, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
