Historical NoteDuring the 1964 election cycle, Lyndon B. Johnson ran as the Democratic candidate against Republican Barry Goldwater. In a September 29, 1964 speech in Cincinnati, Barry Goldwater claimed that the Johnson Administration was “soft on Communism.” President Johnson signed several laws protecting water quality in 1965 such as the Water Quality Act, Water Resource Planning Act, Water and Sanitation Systems in Rural Areas Bill, and the Sale Water Conservation Act.Additional Details
