Historical NoteThe 1956 Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago and resulted in the nomination of Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver as president and vice-president. Senator Lyndon Johnson ran for president in 1956, but lost the nomination. Allan Shivers was a Democratic governor of Texas from 1949-1957. He belonged to the Shivercrat faction, which were a group of conservative Democrats in Texas. He broke away from other Democrats when he supported Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, and later when he opposed Brown v Board of Education in 1954. In this cartoon, the Texas Democrats split between the platforms of Allan Shivers and Lyndon Johnson.Additional Details
