Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A battered elephant is tied to a spit and hangs over hot coals. LBJ is the barbeque chef turning the spit while Hubert Humphrey ("HHH") waits next to him with a plate and utensils. Caption reads: "Elephant a la Pedernales". Artist signature lower left: "Harold Maples".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To the Honorable Lyndon B. Johnson President of the United States with best wishes" "Star Telegram".
Historical NoteLyndon Johnson held barbecues at his ranch by the Pedernales for fellow politicians, press corps, and head-of-state visitors such as Adolfo López Mateos of Mexico and Konrad Adenauer of West Germany.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
