Historical NoteIn 1960, Johnson was a contender for the Democratic nomination for president. When the Democratic front-runner and fellow senator John F. Kennedy offered Johnson the VP spot on the ticket, the two men compromised and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket won in the 1960 presidential election. Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey, Missouri Senator Stuart Symington, and Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson were other candidates in the Democratic primary.Additional Details
