Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. On the shore, LBJ watches a man (“Symington”) dive into water ("Presidential Race"). Two other men (“Kennedy” and “Humphrey”) are already swimming ahead. Another man (“Adlai”) is napping. Caption: “Symington in the Swim”. Artist signature lower left: "Ferman Martin”.

Historical NoteIn 1960, Johnson was a contender for the Democratic nomination for president. When the Democratic front-runner and fellow senator John F. Kennedy offered Johnson the VP spot on the ticket, the two men compromised and the Kennedy-Johnson ticket won in the 1960 presidential election. Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey, Missouri Senator Stuart Symington, and Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson were other candidates in the Democratic primary.
