Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Next to a race track ("Presidential Race"), a man ("Rayburn") says, "His chances look very good" as he gestures to a nearby LBJ. LBJ, whose feet are encased in concrete ("Disavowal of Active Candidacy") looks disinterestedly over his shoulder at Rayburn. A bystander says, "But he's not running?". Caption reads: "His Candidate". Artist signature lower center: "Ferman Martin."
Historical NoteWhen this cartoon was created, Sam Rayburn was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and then Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader. The 1956 Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago and resulted in the nomination of Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver as president and vice-president. Senator Lyndon Johnson ran for president in 1956, but lost the nomination. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora.
