Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. An elephant and LBJ are playing poker at a table. LBJ is wearing a suit, top hat, and diamond jewelry, while the elephant is dressed in overalls and a tattered straw hat. With four aces in front of him, LBJ places the joker card onto the pile of chips ("Strauss Appointment Fight"). The elephant holds five cards in his hand and a shocked expression on his face. Caption reads: "City Slicked". Artist signature lower right: "Bill McClanahan".

Historical NoteLewis Strauss was nominated by President Eisenhower in 1959 as Secretary of Commerce, but the Senate did not confirm the nomination. At the time, Senator Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
