Historical Note
During the 1964 election cycle, the Democratic Party was mostly united under Lyndon B. Johnson. During the remainder of Kennedy's term, Lyndon Johnson passed laws to fight poverty and boost the economy. The Revenue Act of 1964 was passed by Lyndon Johnson February 26th. It was initially proposed by John F. Kennedy and reduced income tax rates. In April 1964, he ended a 5-year dispute over railroad industry, giving a raise to about half of the workers in the union as well as other benefits. In this cartoon, Johnson asks who will go up against him, hinting at the division within the Republican Party. Since Richard Nixon decided not to run in 1964, the Republican Party was divided between the conservative Barry Goldwater and liberal Nelson Rockefeller.
