Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man (identifiable as Nikita Khrushchev) sits laughing behind a desk in a room with a large archway and a view from the window of Russian architecture. He is laughing at a newspaper headline "Johnson 'Soft on Communism' says Goldwater". Two guards are seen talking in the archway. A very small figure talks to a penguin at the lower left corner ("Tell me comrade - Is he really soft on us?". Caption reads: "That Barry Must Be a Riot...Even Nikita Thinks He's Funny!". Artist signature upper center: "Oliphant".

Historical NoteDuring the 1964 election cycle, Lyndon B. Johnson ran as the Democratic candidate against Republican Barry Goldwater. In a September 29, 1964 speech in Cincinnati, Barry Goldwater claimed that the Johnson Administration was “soft on Communism.”

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
