Historical NoteDuring the 1964 election cycle, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater ran as a Republican with a pro-segregation platform against incumbent President Lyndon Johnson. The John Birch Society is a right-wing, anti-Communist group. During the 1960s, it opposed the Johnson administration’s Vietnam War policy, considering the intervention to be part of a Communist conspiracy. It also opposed the civil rights movement and socially liberal movements. The Minutemen were an anti-communist organization in the 1960s who were militant and nativist. White Citizens' Councils were founded in response to Brown v. Board and were pro-segregation.Additional Details
